CNC Plasma Cutting vs Laser Cutting for Metal Fabrication

Industrial machine gears and drive shaft

CNC plasma and laser cutting should be compared against the same parts and acceptance criteria. Material, thickness, feature size, edge condition, production mix, downstream operations, utilities and total operating requirements determine which process fits a fabrication shop.

Compare the actual part family

Use representative drawings rather than a general request for the “best” process. Include external contours, holes, slots, small features, bevels and the range of plate sizes. Define what edge condition is acceptable before machining, forming or welding.

  • Conductive material types and thicknesses
  • Smallest features and hole requirements
  • Edge angularity, dross and heat-affected-zone expectations
  • Batch sizes, nesting and changeover frequency

Review the complete system and operating inputs

For plasma, review the cutting table or gantry, source, torch-height control, CNC, software, gases, consumables and extraction. Laser systems have a different combination of source, optics, assist gas, enclosure and maintenance needs. Compare the complete installed workflow, not only cutting speed.

  • Capital and site-preparation scope
  • Power, gases and extraction
  • Consumables and planned maintenance
  • Operator skills, programming and support

Use a two-stage selection process

First use the CNC cutting machine selection guide to define requirements. Then review the plasma CNC cutting machine against those inputs. Sasha Weldcut should confirm the suitable configuration before quotation.

  • Provide sample drawings and material data
  • State required throughput and shifts
  • Identify downstream work and rejection criteria
  • Confirm floor layout and material handling

Buyer questions

Is laser always more accurate than plasma?

Capability depends on the actual system, material, thickness, feature and acceptance criteria. Compare tested results for representative parts.

Is plasma always cheaper?

Cost depends on equipment scope, utilities, consumables, maintenance, labour, output and downstream operations; calculate it for the intended workload.
