Welding Positioner Types: L-Type, Roll-Over and Head-Tail Stock

Industrial grinding on a rotating metal component

Welding positioner types are not interchangeable names for the same machine. A conventional table positioner, L-type arrangement, roll-over positioner and head-tail-stock system support different workpiece geometries and motion requirements. Selection starts with the fully fixtured job and every required weld orientation.

Conventional and L-type positioning

A conventional automatic welding positioner may rotate and tilt a workpiece mounted to a table. An L-type welding manipulator uses a different structural arrangement and should be reviewed from its actual reach, axes, fixture and load path. Engineering confirmation is required before treating “positioner” and “manipulator” as equivalent.

  • Fully fixtured mass and centre of gravity
  • Required rotation, tilt and reach
  • Fixture interface and weld access
  • Loading route and swept envelope

Roll-over positioning for fabricated assemblies

A roll-over welding positioner is intended to reorient a large fabricated structure using an engineered support and rotation arrangement. Supply the overall dimensions, mass distribution, support points, fixture concept and required positions.

  • Assembly geometry and stiffness
  • Centre of gravity through the motion
  • Support, restraint and fixture design
  • Safe loading, rotation and operator zones

Head-and-tail-stock support for long workpieces

A head-and-tail-stock welding manipulator supports a long workpiece between two ends. Selection requires span, mass, centre height, support interfaces, rotation requirement and the relationship with any welding manipulator.

  • Workpiece length, diameter and mass
  • Headstock and tailstock interface
  • Alignment and support requirements
  • Integration with torch-positioning equipment

Buyer questions

Which positioner is best for a long vessel?

The answer depends on end support, diameter, mass, centre of gravity, weld locations and whether the job needs rotators, head-tail support or another fixture.

Can a positioner be selected from load alone?

No. Geometry, centre of gravity, required axes, fixture, speed, swept area and safe loading also matter.
