A welding automation project starts with a stable definition of the part, joint, process and production objective. Equipment selection comes later. This checklist helps a fabrication team prepare the engineering inputs needed for a positioner, manipulator, beam line, robotic cell or custom welding SPM review.
Define the work before choosing equipment
Collect representative drawings and describe the current process. Record variation in incoming parts, datum surfaces, joint preparation and the approved welding requirements. Separate facts from targets that still need trials.
- Part family, drawings and material
- Joint type, access and preparation
- Approved process and consumables
- Current cycle, constraints and quality checks
Map fixturing, motion and operator tasks
Decide what must be clamped, rotated, tilted, translated or tracked. Compare a welding positioner, column and boom manipulator, beam welding line or custom SPM from the required motion rather than the product name.
- Datum and clamping strategy
- Required axes and working envelope
- Loading, unloading and changeover
- Operator interaction and maintenance access
Agree controls, safety and acceptance
Document interface responsibility, operating modes, alarms, safe access, emergency stops, training, manuals and acceptance tests. Robotic or collaborative systems require an application-specific risk assessment; equipment labels do not replace that process.
- Control architecture and interfaces
- Risk assessment and safeguarding responsibilities
- Installation, commissioning and training
- Trial parts, measurements and acceptance criteria
Buyer questions
What should be automated first?
Start with a repeatable bottleneck whose part presentation, joint, process and acceptance criteria can be defined.
When should a project use an SPM instead of a robot?
Compare part variety, path flexibility, fixtures, process, cycle, changeover and safety using the actual production mix.
